The occupiers have also opened fire on the route of the IAEA mission.
The town of Energodar, where the IAEA mission is supposed to arrive, has been under Russian shelling since the morning. Helicopters are flying over the town.
Today at 4:57 a.m., as a result of another mortar attack by Russian occupation troops on the site of Zaporizhzhia NPP, the emergency protection was activated and the 5th operating power unit was shut down.
This was reported by NNEGC Energoatom.
In addition, as noted, the 330 kV backup auxiliary power line of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was damaged. The inoperative power unit No.2 was de-energized in the transient mode, with the diesel generators running.
"This is the second time in the last 10 days that the criminal actions of the Russians have resulted in the unit being shut down and the plant being de-energized. Power generating unit No.6 continues to operate in the Ukrainian energy system and at the same time covers ZNPP's own needs. The plant's Ukrainian staff is doing everything possible to repair the damage to its infrastructure," the statement said.
Earlier, Energodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov said that mortar shelling in the town has not stopped since 5am today, September 1. According to him, spurts of fire were also heard in the town.
Russian troops shelled IAEA route from Zaporizhzhia to ZNPP
The head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Starukh, said that the Russians have shelled the route of the IAEA from Zaporizhzhia to the nuclear power plant.
- The Russians are shelling the pre-agreed route of the IAEA mission from Zaporizhzhia to ZNPP. The UN advance team cannot continue the journey for security reasons. Ukraine is making efforts to ensure safe access for the IAEA international mission to the Zaporizhzhia NPP. We demand from the Russian Federation to stop provocations and allow unimpeded access for the IAEA to the Ukrainian nuclear facility.
