First Minister of Scotland: Belarus Freedom Struggle Represents a Fight for Freedom Across Europe
And all over the world.
Scottish First Minister Hamza Yousaf said the Scottish Government would “do everything we can” to help the cause of preserving freedom in Europe. This was said after a meeting with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, writes The herald.
“The Scottish Government fully condemns the abhorrent actions of the Lukashenka regime and the ongoing human rights abuses in Belarus. The fight for freedom in this country is also an act of fight for further freedom in Europe and around the world — and to the extent possible, the government I lead will do everything we can to promote this cause,” he assured.
In response to the call, the minister announced that he would take on the role of “godfather” of political prisoner Dzmitry Halavach from the Tor Band, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison. Thus, he became the first head of government in the world to do this, the publication notes. Four fellow ministers from the Scottish Government have also taken on the role of “godparents” to Belarusian political prisoners.
