The country's army has moved to the side of the protesters.
Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina has been evacuated from Antananarivo due to the fact that the ongoing protests and military mutiny across the country could lead to his overthrow. This is reported by RFI.
According to the publication, the politician left the country on a French military plane. In addition, Rajoelina's evacuation was coordinated in advance with French President Emmanuel Macron.
In late September, unrest began on the island due to water and power outages. Organizing through social media, residents of Antananarivo and other major cities went on demonstrations seeking normal electricity and water supplies.
October 11, media reported that military personnel from CAPSAT (Army Personnel Administration Corps) and protesters were able to enter the 13 May Square in Antananarivo. The soldiers publicly refused to follow orders to open fire on the protesters and called on other security forces in the country to support them. The President of Madagascar has since declared a coup attempt in the country.
