The Baltic States have withdrawn from the Ottawa Convention.
On June 27, the Baltic States officially notified the United Nations of their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention banning the use of anti-personnel mines.
As Censor.NO, the countries' foreign ministers Margus Tsahkna, Kęstutis Budrys and Baiba Braže said this.
Budrys said Lithuania "has no illusions" and realizes that Russia is a long-term existential threat to Europe. It is waging war to achieve its own political goals, undermining stability through sabotage and preparing for a long confrontation.
"In the face of such threats, Lithuania will take all necessary measures to defend its state, population and every centimeter of NATO territory - by all effective military means," he said.
Estonian Foreign Minister Tsahkna said the lesson of Russia's war against Ukraine shows that it is not necessary to impose unilateral arms restrictions to better protect a country. Besides, the enemy does not respect them.
"By withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, the Estonian Armed Forces will have greater flexibility in choosing the weapon systems, tools and solutions needed to strengthen the country's defense capabilities," the statement said.
Brazhe said that the regional security situation has changed significantly since Latvia joined the convention. Russia, by invading Ukraine, has shown disrespect for the country's territorial borders and international law.
"Withdrawal from the Convention will give Latvia flexibility in actions to strengthen deterrence and ensure the protection of the country and its citizens," the minister said.
According to the Convention, the withdrawal comes into force six months after the submission of the said document.
