Merz Made An Important Statement On German Security

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in statements for Bundeswehr Day urged against taking peace and security for granted and stressed the importance of efforts to strengthen defense capabilities, Tagesschau reported.

On the occasion of Bundeswehr Day, Merz visited the Operational Command near Potsdam.

In his address, he warned against a false sense of guaranteed security in Germany and called for greater efforts to strengthen defense capabilities, mentioning Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

"We must not take our security for granted. We must do more to ensure that we can continue to live in freedom, peace and security," Friedrich Merz stressed.

He thanked the military for their service and stressed that their work is key to ensuring that the country can live in peace and prosperity.

In the current budget plans, the federal government plans to more than double the defense budget to €152.8 billion by 2029. In 2024, spending amounted to 74.5 billion euros, with 115.7 billion euros planned for the current year.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful, for his part, warned against underestimating the threat Russia poses to Germany.
