The Kremlin reacted nervously.

The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, hosted an important meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The talks were another step in attempts to achieve lasting peace between the two countries, which have been in conflict for decades, especially amid disputes over Nagorno-Karabakh and neighboring territories, Azerbaijani and Armenian Radio Liberty.

High-ranking officials from the Armenian side took part in the negotiation process: Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Parliament Vice Speaker Ruben Rubinian. The Azerbaijani delegation was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev, Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov, Presidential Special Representative Elchin Amirbayov and Foreign Ministry spokesman Hikmet Hajiyev.

According to historian Jirayr Liparitian in an interview with the BBC, the agenda included the unblocking of transportation corridors, primarily the Zangezur corridor project, as well as issues of border demarcation and other disputes that have not been settled so far.

On the eve of the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the progress made and hope for a speedy conclusion of the agreement. The US has previously mediated between the two countries and the diplomatic involvement of Washington, as well as Egypt, Qatar and the UAE, is helping to keep the dialog alive.

In the meantime, amid Baku's rapprochement with the West and decreasing dependence on Russia, a turn in rhetoric was seen in Russian propaganda media. The Kremlin's agenda has been instructed to spread negative sentiments toward once friendly but Russia-turned-Azerbaijan, similar to what has been said about Ukraine since 2014.
