Other countries will get "carpetbagging" tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he will impose 35 percent duties on imports from Canada in August and plans to impose carpet tariffs of 15 percent or 20 percent on most other trading partners.

In a letter posted to his social media account, Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that the new rate will take effect Aug. 1 and will be raised if Canada retaliates.

Carney wrote in a post on Platform X on Thursday that Ottawa will continue to protect Canadian workers and businesses in negotiations with the United States as the announced deadline to reach an agreement approaches.
