Citizens are now allowed to grow up to three cannabis plants at home.

Czech President Petr Pavel has approved a law providing for partial decriminalization of marijuana. This is reported by MSN. Under the new rules, citizens are now allowed to grow up to three cannabis plants at home and possess no more than 100 grams of the substance. Outside the home, it is permissible to possess up to 25 grams.

Possession of 100 to 200 grams of marijuana or cultivation of four to five plants will be punishable by administrative penalties. Larger amounts would still be a criminal offense.

An attempt to block the law was made by the Czech Republic's top state prosecutor, Lenka Bradáčová. She warned that the new norm could be used to benefit drug traffickers. However, the Czech Ministry of Justice, which authored the initiative, refuted her fears, pointing to a misinterpretation of the law's provisions.

In Germany, a similar measure came into force on April 1, 2024. Cannabis was removed from the list of prohibited substances regulated by the drug law. Adult citizens were allowed to possess up to 25 grams of marijuana on their person and keep up to 50 grams at home. The cultivation of up to three bushes for personal use was also authorized. However, consumption in public places is only allowed away from schools, childcare centers and sports fields. As noted by Reuters, the legalization of cannabis can annually bring the German budget about $4.7 billion and create up to 27 thousand new jobs.
