The politician played an important role in this process.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz played a key role in the decision of US President Donald Trump to continue military aid to Ukraine. This opinion was voiced by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful, emphasizing the influence of Merz's personal talks with Trump.

This was stated by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful in an interview with the newspaper Bild.

Wadeful said U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to continue military aid to Ukraine is largely due to the active efforts of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"This was largely the result of the chancellor's initiative. Friedrich Merz played an important role in this process, because from the very beginning he clearly stated his support for Ukraine," the minister said.

He also said that Merz personally discussed his position with Trump during talks at the White House as well as at the G7 summit. According to him, the chancellor even called the American leader, emphasizing that "the United States is very much needed right now."

"We can only be happy that the chancellor has established such constructive contacts with the US president and that Germany's voice in Washington has started to be listened to again," Wadeful added.

The statements came amid concerns that the Trump administration may change its approach to supporting Ukraine.

In addition, the German Foreign Ministry's comments indicate that Berlin is trying to play a more active diplomatic role in maintaining transatlantic unity on the war in Ukraine.
