Hundreds of flights canceled, dozens injured.

A powerful typhoon Vifa hit Hong Kong on Sunday, with wind speeds exceeding 167 km/h.

This was reported by Reuters.

The disaster paralyzed the city: more than 400 flights were canceled, public transport was partially halted, hundreds of trees fell and infrastructure was damaged.

The local weather service said the storm warning level in Asia's financial center reached a 10-point high and lasted for nearly seven hours before being downgraded to 8.

The city received more than 110 mm of rainfall within three hours, especially in the northern part bordering mainland China.

Local authorities said at least 26 people sought medical attention and more than 250 people sought shelter at government-run shelters.

At least 471 fallen trees were reported in the city. One of the most dangerous incidents occurred in the North Point neighborhood, where scaffolding was ripped off an apartment building and scattered across the road.

Massive flight cancellations and traffic stoppage

Hong Kong Airport reported the cancellation of 400 flights, affecting more than 80,000 passengers.

Cathay Pacific canceled all departures between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and allowed free rebooking of tickets.

Public transportation in the city was partially out of service, with ferry services halted due to strong waves and some bus routes suspended due to fallen trees and flooded roads.

The situation in the region

Typhoon Vifa continued to move towards southern China's Guangdong province and was forecast to hit the coast between the cities of Zhuhai and Zhanjiang in the evening.

In Macau, a storm danger level eight was also declared, with residents warned of possible waterlogging and urged to stay indoors.
