Indefinitely.
Authorities in Russia's regions have stepped up disconnections and slowdowns of mobile Internet in recent days to "ensure safety". We are talking about the Sverdlovsk, Tyumen and Orel regions, Altai and Krasnoyarsk Krais, as well as Udmurtia. Some of them have been jammed since the middle of last week, reports The Moscow Times.
In the morning of July 29, the anti-terrorist commission of the Sverdlovsk region reported that "temporary restriction and slowdown" of mobile Internet in the region was being introduced "for the sake of strengthening security." Citizens were advised to use wired Internet or Wi-Fi connections, as well as to think in advance about movements around the region "with the help of offline maps" and use "alternative payment methods that do not depend on the Internet."
To protect industrial and defense enterprises amid Ukrainian drone raids, the mobile network was jammed in Udmurtia, government head Roman Yefimov reported on the afternoon of July 28, stressing that the restrictions were being introduced "for an indefinite period of time." "This is a preventive measure to block channels for coordinating the enemy's destructive actions against both defense industry enterprises and social sphere facilities," he said, promising to expand the republic's public Wi-Fi network and to report separately on the restoration of Internet access.
On the evening of July 28, Oryol Governor Andrey Klychkov wrote in his Telegram channel that "temporary restrictions" on mobile Internet and communications were a necessity due to "almost daily" attacks by AFU drones on the region. "Once again I ask you to treat this decision with understanding. The safety of the Oryol region and each of its residents is an unconditional priority," he said.
The Internet "in connection with the adoption of additional security measures and for the prevention of network threats" in the afternoon on Monday was switched off in the Altai region, which is 3,500 kilometers away from Ukraine. The restrictions (including slowdowns) "in certain locations" will last for an indefinite number of days, the region's anti-terrorist commission said.
In the Tyumen region, there has been no internet since July 24. Access to the network is blocked "for the safety of citizens", they will be removed "as soon as the situation allows", reported in the information center of the government of the region. They added that there are 186 points of free Wi-Fi network TyumenFree in the region.
In Krasnoyarsk Krai restrictions have been observed since the evening of July 26, all operators have problems. The head of the local Regional Management Center (RMC) Ekaterina Kuzminykh reacted to the complaints of remotely working Krasnoyarsk residents, who lost access to the network, with the comment: "There is enough work for everyone on SWO". The governor of the region Mikhail Kotyukov on the fourth day of the shutdown asked residents to treat the situation with understanding and referred to the "operational situation".
In total, on July 28, Internet shutdowns were reported in 62 regions of the Russian Federation, according to the project "On Communication". In 44 of them only mobile Internet limitations were recorded, in another 17 complained about the lack of access to both mobile and wired Internet. In the remaining regions, outages were not recorded "due to insufficient information from there," the analysts said.
