The US will have a powerful tool to influence the Kremlin.
The US Senate will consider a bill that allows President Donald Trump to impose 500% duties against countries that buy Russian goods and finance Moscow's war machine.
The announced Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Graham praised Trump's efforts to end the bloodshed in Ukraine. However, he said, this requires partners willing to cooperate.
The senator said Ukraine has agreed to a cease-fire and to all offers of meetings while Putin continues to ignore peace initiatives.
"It's time to give President Trump more tools to end the war," he wrote.
Graham expects the Senate to advance a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill that would allow tariffs and sanctions against countries that support Putin's war machine and do not provide aid to Ukraine.
He said the bill would include a presidential clause to give President Trump maximum leverage.
"The bill already has 85 co-sponsors, and the number is growing. It's time to put an end to this bloodshed," he added.
