The pause was not indicative of a new policy or position in Washington.
Despite the anxiety and uproar surrounding the halt in military shipments, it turned out that all that was needed was to wait. The pause in arms shipments was not indicative of a new policy or position in Washington. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said this during a July 8 briefing, according to the Pentagon's website.
"We have been and continue to be Ukraine's biggest supporters. We care about these people. We care about making sure they have everything they need," she assured.
The State Department spokeswoman noted that Trump was clear about the massacre in Ukraine and the need to end it with a mutual ceasefire. She reiterated that arms shipments have been restored and that the U.S. president is "very passionate and determined about Ukraine's ability to defend itself."
Bruce assured that the pause in shipments was due to a standard review of all weapons and assistance the U.S. provides to all countries and regions of the world. She described how after Zelensky's phone call, Trump spoke favorably of the call and said he would continue to help the Ukrainian leader.
"So, again, we have helped them, we are helping them and we will continue to help them. This is a rather difficult situation. And this is our position. It's always been that way, and I'm glad that after last week there's some clarity here," the spokeswoman added.
She also commented on Trump's peace efforts and responded regarding his confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Bruce, the Republican is making efforts, remains committed to diplomacy above all else, and is not giving up. She emphasized that if negotiations were built on trust, there would be no agreements with people who bring death and destruction. But this is about something else - creating an environment where these people are obliged to stick to a certain dynamic so that they don't pay a certain price.
"You don't have to trust someone to do that. You have to have an environment that someone - only, frankly, Donald Trump and the United States - can create to put certain people on a path that is best for the world and their own countries," the State Department spokeswoman assured.
She emphasized that Trump is open-minded but not naive, and he clearly knows what he is trying to achieve.
