Poland To Buy 180 Korean K2 Tanks

Poland on August 1 signed an executive contract to supply 180 more Korean K2 tanks, including the first in the polonized version K2PL, RMF24 reported.

Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh participated in the signing ceremony of the contract between the Arms Agency and South Korea's Hyundai Rotem on Friday.
The contract provides for the delivery of 180 K2 tanks, of which 64 vehicles will be produced in the K2PL configuration adapted to Polish needs.
The head of the Defense Ministry stressed that the signing of the contract coincides with the 81st anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising.
"In order to ensure that the sacrifice of the insurgents was not in vain, we had to do our homework on the hard lessons of history. As long as we invest in our security, their sacrifice will not be in vain," Kosiniak-Kamysh said.
The contract includes not only the delivery of tanks, but also associated vehicles, as well as a full package of training and service and maintenance. A key element of the contract is the transfer of technology and the start of tank production in Poland. The Bumar-Labendy plant will build 61 of the 64 tanks in the K2PL version.
K2 Black Panther is a new generation base tank designed for the modern battlefield. The vehicle weighs about 55 tons and is operated by a crew of three. The main armament is a 120 mm smoothbore gun with automatic reloading, which allows for rapid fire and increased combat effectiveness.
The tank is powered by a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h on the road and to move efficiently over difficult terrain.
The K2 has a range of approximately 450 kilometers.
