European leaders are discussing a plan to deploy troops.
European leaders are discussing the possible deployment of British and French military forces in Ukraine, Bloomberg news agency reports. The talks on August 19 focused on the details of troop transfers, their numbers and locations - which could be part of a peace settlement, the agency notes.
Sources say about 10 countries are ready to participate in sending military contingents to Ukraine. White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said sending U.S. troops to Ukraine was not under consideration, but the United States could provide air defense for Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the leaders of Canada, Japan, Turkey, New Zealand and European countries have reiterated the need for continued support for Ukraine. NATO military chiefs and alliance defense ministers will meet in the coming days to work out security guarantees and the deployment of a deterrent force.
The first phase of support is planned to help the Ukrainian military with training and reinforcement. France and Britain are ready to send hundreds of soldiers who will be away from the contact line. In the next phase, the U.S. will share intelligence, help with weapons supplies and possibly air defense, Bloomberg reported
