US President Donald Trump's favorite newspaper, the New York Post, has called on US President Donald Trump to increase pressure on Russia, particularly in the economy, which Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is using to fund his war machine.
The NYP editorial noted that Trump wants a peace deal as soon as possible, so he organized a summit with the Russian dictator in Alaska in a short period of time, and then, three days later, gathered European leaders at the White House.
At the same time, Putin "repaid" his efforts by delaying the process, the newspaper said. Russia does not even agree to meetings between Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. The meeting can only take place after certain conditions are met, which is usually impossible, and any Western promises to protect Ukraine without a Russian veto are, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, a "road to nowhere," the NYP noted.
The article's authors noted that Russia killed 14 Ukrainian civilians over the weekend after the summit in Alaska. After Trump and Zelensky met on Monday, Russia fired 270 drones and 10 missiles - the most since August. Since then, the shelling has only intensified.
The newspaper also recalled that Trump recently said he wanted to end the war so he could "go to heaven."
"If I can save 7,000 people from dying every week, I think that's enough...I want to try to go to heaven if it's possible. I've heard I'm not doing well. They say I'm at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I get to heaven, that [ending the war] would be one of the reasons," the American president said in an interview on Fox News.
New York Post notes that it's a "noble goal" - even worthy of a Nobel Prize - but it's unattainable unless Putin is forced to the negotiating table.
"But what kind of pressure is being put on Russia? One might think it is the large number of war dead, but Putin is not concerned about the harm to his own people. He claims it is a necessary sacrifice," the publication said.
The newspaper emphasizes that Putin understands only one language - the language of finance - and now the Russian economy is under severe pressure due to war spending, soaring inflation and international sanctions.
The New York Post emphasized the need for secondary sanctions aimed at the shadow markets through which the Russian dictator finances his war machine. The newspaper believes that increased sanctions will force Russia to change its strategy and come to negotiations.
"It was the threat of such sanctions from the United States on Aug. 8 that convinced Putin to agree to the Alaska summit. But since then, Putin has only 'led us around by the nose.' Enough. You do realize, Mr. President, that power speaks for itself," the newspaper wrote.
The New York Post said that to get Putin to the negotiating table, the United States should:
- Impose new sanctions,
- Increase tariffs,
- Find creative ways to cut off Russia's oil and mineral trade.
"That would quickly get Moscow's attention. It will make Putin move at the same speed as you do. And it will, God willing, stop the killing," the newspaper summarized in its message to the American president.
