Erica Kirk quoted the gospel at the funeral ceremony.

The widow of slain American conservative activist Charlie Kirk Erica said at a funeral ceremony held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona that she has forgiven the man who shot her husband, CNN reported.

"I forgive him," the woman said, after which she received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Erica Kirk also quoted the Gospel phrase, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing," which Jesus Christ uttered on the cross as he was crucified alongside two thieves.

According to the TV station, tens of thousands of people in the stadium rose from their seats after the phrase was uttered.

The widow of the slain politician said her husband's mission was to save young people from a meaningless life "full of resentment, anger and hatred."

"I forgive him because that's what Christ did. The answer to hate is not hate," the woman concluded.

U.S. President Donald Trump, for his part, called Kirk's killer a "radicalized, cold-blooded monster," CNN reported. The 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, 22, is accused of killing the Trump supporter.

The U.S. leader made the remarks shortly after the widow of slain Erica Kirk said she had forgiven the alleged killer.

At a farewell ceremony for Kirk, Trump spoke with American entrepreneur Ilon Musk. They sat next to each other in the presidential box.

Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 during a speech at a university in Utah. The politician suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was hospitalized in critical condition. He later passed away. He was survived by his wife and two children.

The arrest of the suspect in Kirk's murder was announced by the US president two days later. He noted that the father of the accused had assisted in the capture. Trump also expressed hope that the killer would be sentenced to death. Such a sentence has promised to achieve Utah County Prosecutor Jeff Gray.
