This could be a test of the readiness of the US and NATO allies.
U.S. fighter jets on Wednesday, September 24, intercepted Russian Tu-95s and Su-35s that were flying near Alaska.
This was said in a statement by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), reports RBC-Ukraine with reference to CBS News.
According to NORAD, two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers and two Su-35 fighters were in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). This is international airspace that adjoins the airspace of the United States AND Canada.
To identify the Russian aircraft and intercept them, the U.S. took to the air an E-3 long-range radar detection and control aircraft, as well as four F-16s and four KC-135 refueling tankers.
But according to CBS News, it could be a test of readiness by the U.S. and NATO allies.
Analogous Russian provocation near Alaska occurred last month, when the U.S. also raised fighter jets to intercept.
In late August, NORAD reported that it had detected and escorted a Russian reconnaissance plane in the ADIZ zone.
