The AFU Went Forward In Four Directions At Once

  • 5.09.2025, 8:43

The advance of Ukrainian forces was shown on maps.

The Ukrainian military struck radar systems in the Rostov region and successfully counterattacked in several directions. However, the Russians are pulling forces in the Zaporizhzhya direction.

The Russian troops continue offensive actions in several directions. The defense forces manage to hold back the enemy and counterattack. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assessed the situation on the front as of September 4.

Situation in Sumy Oblast

Ukrainian forces likely struck two radar systems in Rostov Oblast on the territory of the former 1244th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment on the night of September 4. NASA Fire Information for Resource Management (FIRMS) data collected on Sept. 4 showed heat signatures at the Russian Southern Navigation Radar System-1 in Rostov-on-Don and at the territory of the former Russian 1244th Air Defense Missile Regiment, which used to operate S-300PS air defense systems, near Nazarov (northeast of Rostov-on-Don).

In the meantime, Russian forces have recently advanced in the northern part of Sumy region, namely south of Yablonovka (northeast of the city of Sumy).

Ukrainian military analyst Konstantin Mashovets reported that the Defense Forces have successfully carried out counterattacks near Kondratovka, Alekseevka and Sadkov (northeast of Sumy).

Mashovets said the occupants advanced about half a kilometer north of Varachyn (north of Sumy) to the O-191504 Varachyno - Alekseevka highway.

The Institute quoted an unnamed Russian military blogger, presumably affiliated with the Northern Group of Forces, as saying that Ukrainian drones reduce Russia's superiority in manpower and equipment, and the Russian tactic of using small groups to infiltrate and accumulate in the near Ukrainian rear is ineffective in the Sumy direction because Russian troops cannot bypass Ukrainian positions undetected. Russian commanders simply send attackers through open fields on the southern outskirts of Alekseevka.

What's happening in Kharkiv Oblast

Ukrainian forces have recently advanced toward Kupyansk. Konstantin Mashovets hinted on September 4 that the AFU had regained some positions near the UkrAvtoGas and TatNafta gas stations on the northern outskirts of Kupyansk.

A spokesman for a Ukrainian brigade operating in the direction of Kupyansk said Russian troops use so-called invisibility cloaks to move singly or in pairs at night up to one kilometer to the AFU's forward positions before concentrating and attacking.

The situation in Donetsk region

The AFU recently advanced in the northwestern part of Serebryanka (northeast of Seversk).

The Ukrainian forces also advanced in the western part of Katerynivka (south of Kostyantynivka).

Russian forces conducted offensive operations northeast of Dobropillya, but had no success.

In the meantime, geolocated footage released on September 4 shows two Russian troops raising a flag in Novoselovka (east of Velikomikhailovka). ISW believes that this locality in Dnipropetrovsk region is occupied.

Is there any advance in Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions

No advances have been recorded in Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions by either the enemy or the AFU.

The deputy commander of a Ukrainian brigade operating in the Zaporizhzhya region said on September 4 that Russian troops are increasing their activity in the area, in particular: they are using more heavy equipment to attack Ukrainian positions and are seriously preparing for an offensive.

He said that Russian troops first used first-person view (FPV) drones, including those with fiber-optic cables, and reconnaissance drones to target Ukrainian troops in forward positions before attacking with armored vehicles. The deputy commander said Russian troops are advancing through a 10-kilometer "gray zone" of high-risk drone operations, first driving a trawl to clear mines and new routes, followed by an offensive by Russian infantry.

General situation on the front - what is happening

Russia is moving elite troops from Sumy and Kherson regions to Donetsk region for a fall offensive. The enemy plans to focus on capturing the rest of Donetsk region.

The AFU has liberated Udachnoye in Donetsk region, the Ukrainian flag has been planted over the settlement after a complete cleanup of Russian occupiers.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces have pushed back the enemy near the village of Tolstoy in Donetsk region, destroying Russian positions.
